How Will the Internet of Everything Impact Your Healthcare?

Greetings! I hope everyone had a relaxing weekend!

I wanted to start off this week by sharing a video from Cisco's YouTube channel. As the acknowledged leader in the Internet of Everything (IoE), Cisco gives a great practical example of how the IoE can be utilized within the Healthcare space.

As you can see, the IoE is working to improve the way we view healthcare, but it isn't stopping there. In the past, we have talked a lot about the use of Artificial Intelligence (more specifically Virtual Assistants) in the healthcare industry. As time progresses, there is an increasing amount of automation in the doctor's office. In fact, in a podcast shared earlier in the year, experts in this arena debated whether robots had better bedside manner than a human doctor. In the end, there were quite a few people who preferred the Artificial Intelligence.

People are beginning to warm up to the idea of letting robots and/or Artificial Intelligence play a major role in their lives. Take wearable devices for example. Most wearable devices are designed as a health monitor; tracking exercise, diet, blood pressure, etc. With the IoE, your personal physician can retrieve the data from your health monitor and sync it with your digital file. This way, if you have to see a doctor, he/she will have accurate data and be better equipped to diagnose the problem.

Do you think the IoE is going to impact healthcare, or is it just an over-the-top fantasy? What do you think about Virtual Assistants becoming nurses? Let us know what you think in the comments section below.

Cheers!

Throwback Thursday: Virtual Agents for Wearable Devices

Happy Throwback Thursday!

Earlier in the year, noHold published a short demo video showing you how Virtual Agents can augment the Internet of Everything. Check it out below:

When asking the community what they think about wearable devices, there has been an overwhelming lack of consensus on this technology. People have mixed feelings whether to embrace this disruptive tech, or reject it completely. With the announcement of the Apple Watch to come out in 2015, we'll see if wearable devices will gain a little more traction than before.

In addition to being the latest wearable device in the game, Apple Watch also comes equipped with Apple's well known Personal Virtual Assistant, Siri, but Siri seems to be falling short compared to other personal Virtual Assistants lately. While it has received some updates, one important feature that Siri still lacks is the ability to follow a conversation. You can ask it a question, but as soon as you ask another question, Siri loses the context of the conversation.

For wearable devices and the Internet of Everything to be a more usable concept, a Virtual Agent (VA) needs to be able to act as a 'butler' (similar to the video above), to manage all the devices and applications in your life. It should be able to, not only do what you ask, but also suggest other actions based on gathered knowledge and reference back to the context of the conversation. For example, you ask the VA to set the alarm for 6:30 AM. The VA sets the alarm, but comes back with the suggestion to set your alarm a little earlier because your gas tank is low and you need to fill up in the morning.

What are your thoughts on the future of wearable devices? Are they going to be a dying trend or will they be the next must-have devices? How do you think a more conversational and intuitive Virtual Agent will impact wearable devices and the Internet of Everything?

Virtual Agent Tips and Tricks: Virtual Agents For Your Community Forum

This week's Tuesday tip: Virtual Agents are a great asset to social media pages, community forums, or blogs.

Community forums are a typical form of support for many companies. It is a simple, and collaborative way to find answers to questions. One way to amplify these forums is by implementing a Virtual Agent that can live on the page and act as either a virtual moderator or simply 'sit' on the sidelines as a brand expert. A virtual moderator works as an active force to answer questions posted on the forum. If the Virtual Agent can answer a question with a high degree of certainty, it will post the answer automatically. The other option is to have the Virtual host as an additional resource to the community forum. Instead of users posting a question and waiting for a human response, they can ask the Virtual Agent first. By doing so, they can get an immediate answer.

Virtual Agents can extend across Social Media (i.e. Facebook, etc). Many companies leverage Virtual Agents on social media for more than just answering support questions, though. The Virtual Agent allows your audience to access your knowledge base for information on products, services, deals, and events. As you can see, the Virtual Agent can do more than just provide excellent support, it can help create an entire experience.

Social media is increasingly becoming one of the most popular channels your customers are going to for all their needs. Is your company staying connected? How does your company manage unanswered forum posts?

Virtual Agents Help Fight The Flu Season

Happy Monday! Hope everyone had a great weekend.

I wanted to start off this week by addressing all the coughing, sniffling, and sneezing you have been hearing around lately. School started back up, seasons changed... and the dreaded flu season sneaks up on us again. Here is a short video from CNN's YouTube channel with some Do's and Don'ts for the flu season.

During these peak seasons, an influx in call volume pours into the call center; including companies in the health care industry. "Should I get a flu shot?" "Where can I get a flu shot nearest to me?" "My young child has the flu, what should I do?" These are all typical questions that get asked during these times that can cause a lot of congestion in the call centers. Utilizing automated self-service, such as a Virtual Agent, allows patients to get answers to their questions quick and easy. Not only is it easier for patients, but it also benefits call center agents, who now have more time to answer complex questions that require human intervention.

noHold has customers that come from a wide array of industries: from consumer electronics, health care, telecommunications, financial, security software, and more. The ability for companies to customize Virtual Agent content, as well as the style of the conversation makes these self-service applications the perfect solution for any business in any industry, especially during peak seasons.

In the future, will Virtual Agents be able to interpret symptoms and make a diagnosis? Can a Virtual Agent act as an advice nurse during hours when a human is unavailable? Tell us what you think.

Mobile phone user interfaces have been changing ever since the inception of the first cell phone. Mobile phones went from large, chunky devices, to tiny, basic devices. Now, smartphones are moving back toward larger screens, but with sleeker designs. Virtual Agent user interfaces have been adapting since their inception as well. From simple text on a DOS screen, to fully integrative, multi-pane U.I.'s with avatars and promotions. Check out this blog for more information on the progression of U.I.'s

Throwback Thursday: From Large Mobile Phones to Small Mobile Phones...and Back to Large?

Happy Throwback Thursday!

With all the buzz around the announcement of the new iPhone 6, and the competition releasing their new smartphones on the market, it seems fitting to look back at the beginning designs of mobile phones.

To the left you can see the progression of mobile phones. When Motorola first put out their cell phone, it was almost bigger than a house phone, but as time went on, they recognized the demand for smaller phones. Likewise, other major cell phone manufacturers followed suit and kept trying to make mobile phones smaller and smaller.

As you can see in today's generation, mobile phones are turning into smartphones, and those smartphones are reverting back to the 'bigger is better' motto. Apple typically remained the same size, but with their latest iPhone, the screen is much larger than previous models. It is comparable to Samsung's Galaxy Note smartphones. With all the features and capabilities, developers needed to adapt the user interface to better fit all of the functionality.

Similar to smartphones, the User Interfaces (UI) of Virtual Agents have progressively changed over the course of time to better accommodate users. In the past, Virtual Agent interfaces were text on a DOS screen, and eventually evolved to look very similar to AOL instant messenger. Now, Virtual Agents have become more sleek, can include multi-pane U.I.'s, avatars and promotions, the potential for speech capabilities, predictive text, and much more. In the past, Virtual Agents found their home on a website, and were best accessed from a laptop or computer; however, today, Virtual Agents make so much sense for the mobile customer experience (right, Siri?).

The user interface is not the only thing that is constantly updated; the administrative tools have also come a long way. For example, Virtual Agents can now integrate with third-party platforms, provide custom reporting, and with the Internet of Everything now in play, the capabilities are endless.

What do you think the future of user interfaces will look like? How do you think the Internet of Everything will play a role in device designs?

The Benefits of a Virtual Agent for BPOs

Outsourcing is not a new paradigm; in fact, many well-known and trusted brands leverage BPO vendors to successfully manage customer support, service, sales and more.

In order to drive productivity and efficiency, companies turn to BPOs. According to the infographic from INFINIT-O on the left, companies are increasing the amount they spend on outsourcing, while in-house spending is remaining relatively constant.

Leading analyst firms agree that Virtual Agents play an important role in a successful customer interaction, which bleeds into integration in the services that BPOs provide. Automation, profitability, and scalability are just a few of the challenges that Business Process Outsourcers face. And in a new era of smart machines, Virtual Agents offer a competitive advantage.

Here are just a few use cases for adding a Virtual Agent to the BPO's existing portfolio of services:

1. Increase revenue by adding disruptive new offerings.
BPO companies can offer their customers the Virtual Agent to provide a scalable solution that will continue to work as the company grows. The Virtual Agent can also be used to increase conversion rates and generate more leads by suggesting products or services in the appropriate context. BPO companies can also offer the Virtual Agent during peak seasons such as seasonal demand, new product offerings, or even natural calamities.
By offering the Virtual Agent, BPO companies increase revenue, while providing their customers with the best services for their needs, when they need it.

2. Increase efficiency at Call Center (lower AHT and training time).
By implementing a Virtual Agent, Contact Center Agents can ask the VA questions while on the phone with customers, follow business guidelines and procedures easily, and can rely on a single repository of information for correct and consistent answers.

3. Provide a competitive strategic advantage.
Leading analyst firm predicts that BPOs must adopt 'automation' to achieve non-linear growth.

Whether a company adds a Virtual Agent to the existing in-house Contact Center, positions it on the Website as a self-service option, or your BPO vendor provides one for Contact Center Agents, it is a a cost-effective way to provide the end user with the new standard for customer service.

What do you think about the future of the Contact Center? Do you see Virtual Agents empowering the Contact Center (either outsourced or in-house)?

Virtual Agent Tips and Tricks: Google Now Features Better Than Siri? Better than Cortana?

When we talk about Personal Virtual Assistant, Siri usually is the first name that comes to mind. Although, Siri might be one of the better-known virtual assistants, it certainly is not the only one.

In the past we have talked a lot about some of the cool features most people didn't know about Siri. For this week's Virtual Agent tips and tricks blog, I wanted to share with you some lesser known features, about Google Now. Here are "9 Things You May Not Have Known About Google Now." (2014, Daniel Bean, Yahoo! Tech)

1. You can ask specific question to bring up information cards.
2. You can say, "Hey, Google" to launch the app.
3. Google can learn your relationships to contacts.
4. There are plenty of fun tricks and Easter eggs.
5. You can make Google Now smarter through a survey.
6. Android Wear watches can run Google Now, too.
7. It features a handy tip calculator.
8. Google Now is available on your PC.
9. It can identify music and TV programs just by listening.

As you can tell, some of these features definitely overlap with Siri features such as learning contact relationships, but others are unique to Google Now like being available on wearable devices and using information cards to answer specific questions.

There is always heated debates about which Personal Virtual Assistant is the best: Siri, Google Now, Cortana, Watson, etc. Just check out the commercial Microsoft put out emphasizing the rivalry between Siri and Cortana.

What is your opinion on the virtual rivalries? Which virtual assistant do you use, or would you use? Why?

Happy 15th Birthday, noHold!

Last Friday, September 12, we celebrated noHold’s 15th birthday. We have always prided ourselves on being one of the longest standing virtual agent vendors to date. In an interview with Connected World Magazine, Diego Ventura, the CEO of noHold, talks briefly about how the concept of noHold all started.

CW (Connected World): It is said that the past is prologue, and in that spirit, can I ask you to describe how you came to start noHold 15-years ago?

DV (Diego Ventura): noHold is my second company; my first company was STEFRA Corp. We created a product called Video Control that was bundled with most of the Web cameras of the time. It was a very successful enterprise for us, but it also meant that millions of new customers had questions about our software. I have always been passionate about AI (artificial intelligence), so we thought about creating an Expert System that could answer customers’ questions automatically. The idea caught on and I realized there was the opportunity to create a separate company. I raised $15 million from VCs (venture capitalists) and started noHold.”
To read the full interview, please follow this link.

Throughout the years, we have continued to watch and contribute to the growth of this industry. noHold has acquired great experience over the 15 years of developing Expert Systems and we've determined best practices that help our clients enhance the customer experience, but our technology is also flexible and continuously adapting to keep up with the rapid growth of technology. As the acknowledged leader in Web based self-service solutions, we are very happy that in the past few years, Virtual Agents and artificial intelligence have grown to become household names. More and more people are feeling comfortable interacting and having a conversation with their technologies (artificial intelligence) than ever before. We predict great growth in Virtual Agent adoption, especially within the Internet of Everything (IoE). Nevertheless, we are looking forward to what the next 15 years will bring. Cheers!

A Look Back at noHold's Top Stories of the Week: Sept. 8th-12th

TGIF!!
As another week comes to an end, lets take a look back at some of the exciting news that happened this week.

noHold's Product and Engineering Manager, Dario De Santis, had the opportunity to be involved in a case study with one of our partners, Rackspace, leaders in the managed cloud computing space. Here is a video of Dario explaining how Rackspace is an essential component for noHold products.

On Sept. 9, 2014, Apple announced what they have been working so hard to keep a secret: the iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, Apple Watch, and Apple Pay. With all these new devices there wasn't much talk about Siri. While Microsoft and Google further develop their personal virtual assistants for their smartphones, is Apple falling behind in this space?

"I think Siri has proven to us that people want to relate to their phone in a different way. Yes it can be broader and so forth, but we see unbelievable potential here. I think you're going to be happy with where it's going. We're doubling down on it." (wired.co.uk)

Throwback Thursday: From the First Internet Search Engine to Predictive Search

Approximately 24 years ago, the first Internet search engine was launched, they called it Archie. "It was used to index FTP archives to make finding files easier. How, as the technology for the World Wide Web was not invented until later in the year, it was not the first web search engine." (thisdayintechhistory.com)

Innovations to search engines took off after that. Ever since then, there has been ever-changing improvements to search engine tools. Engineers are continuously trying to come up with ways to make searching easier, and in a span of about a quarter of a century, search has innovated a lot.

In today's World, we use search for almost everything. The most common answer to a question we don't know is, "Google it." It has become so easy to search for information on the Internet with the use of complex algorithms that analyze text (and voice in some cases) to provide you with the right content.

Going forward, predictive search is a hot topic in the tech community. Google started using predictive search algorithms a while back (remember when finishing your sentence in the search bar was a new phenomenon), but now predictive search is getting more intuitive. Not only can it make an educated suggestion as to finishing your sentence, it can suggest answers to questions you didn't even know you wanted to know based on prior interactions.

As we can see, search is beginning to move toward a more intuitive and interactive based logic to find what you need. It is becoming more like a personal assistant that can communicate with you, rather than a simple list of archived files. What do you think about the future of search? With smart machines and the Internet of Everything, how do you think search will adapt to simplify the lives of the billions of connected users?

Tim Cook Says, "People Want to Relate to Their Phone in a Different Way"

About two years ago, Tim Cook, CEO of Apple, was interviewed and asked about Siri. His response was, "I think Siri has proven to us that people want to relate to their phone in a different way. Yes it can be broader and so forth, but we see unbelievable potential here. I think you're going to be happy with where it's going. We're doubling down on it." (wired.co.uk)

Fast forward 2 years, we can tell that they are doing some serious upgrading to Siri technology to keep up with the competition. As we mentioned yesterday, Siri has some interesting new features to appear in the updated iOS8. Back in August, Apple submitted a patent application for a Siri-like virtual assistant for Mac's (appleinsider.com). And now, they are expanding their Siri office in Boston to accommodate their continued work on speech recognition technology. "Earlier this year a report in June suggested Apple could be looking to replace Nuance as the speech recognition component used for Siri pointing to several new hires at the company." (9to5mac.com)

Siri, and other Virtual Assistants alike, provide users with a sense of connection to their devices, making it more personal. It has completely changed the way humans interact with not only our phones, but technology in general. Virtual Agents are being used more and more for customer support (helping users solve their own problems), sales (giving users knowledge and recommendations based on specific, personalized information), and care (letting users know information about their shipments/orders).

Do you agree that Siri has changed the way we relate with our devices? Imagine a life with a more intuitive and interactive Virtual Assistant; similar to a trusted 'pal' that can predict your needs/wants, give you relevant information in real time, and assist you with things such as scheduling, shopping, and controlling other devices. Siri might not be there yet, but it seems that the future of Virtual Assistants is moving in that direction.

Apple's Big Announcement: What Does This Mean For Siri?

"Today, we are pleased to announce the biggest advancement in iPhone." -Tim Cook

The much anticipated Apple event occurred this morning in Cupertino, CA. Here, they announced some of the latest features integrated into the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus.
  • Much larger screen.  iPhone 6 has a 4.7-inch display. iPhone 6 Plus has a 5.5-inch display.
  • The cover glass is made up of a Retina HD display.
  • There is a updated Home screen for landscape mode.
  • iPhone 6 has a 8MP iSight camera, 1.5µ pixels, ƒ/2.2 aperture, with an all new sensor.
  • The predictive keyboard learns your conversation style and helps you answer accordingly.
  • The new Health app gives you a detailed look at your health and fitness data.
  • See how much faster and easier it is to pay with Apple Pay
  • Pre-order your iPhone 6 starting Sept. 12
Not only did they announce all the newest features integrated within the iOS8 platform, they also unveiled the newest addition to their product line, the Apple Watch. Looks like the rumors were right; Apple joined the market for wearable devices. Check out the sleek design.

Siri also made it's way into the Apple Watch. The iPhone 6, 6 Plus, and Apple Watch all run iOS8, which made some significant updates to Siri. Though, the event did not mention Siri much, back in June at Apple's Worldwide Developer Conference, they mentioned some of the updates Siri will be getting in iOS8.

  • Shazam song recognition
  • Voice activation, all you have to do is say "Hey, Siri."
  • Streaming voice recognition
  • 22 new dictation languages
  • Purchasing iTunes content
Do you think this face lift be enough to keep Apple on top of the Virtual Assistant game, competing with Android's Google Now and Microsoft's Cortana?

Throwback Thursday: Virtual Agent Conferences Then and Now

Around this time last year, the 13th annual International Conference on Intelligent Virtual Agents was held in the UK. With all the forward-thinking discussion points at this conference, everyone was excited to see what the 14th annual Conference on IVA was going to have in store.

One of the major topics surrounding this years conference was Virtual Agents in the healthcare field, something we have been anticipating for a while. "In the conference's first keynote address, Dr. Joesph Kvedar, founder and director of the Center for Directed Health at Partners Healthcare, said projected future shortages of physicians and nurses underscore the need for more relational agents in healthcare settings. Kvedar, an internationally recognized expert in connected health and telemedicine, said virtual agents can supplement healthcare professionals' work by automating certain services, thereby increasing efficiencies and reducing costs. The onset of such avatars dovetails with the healthcare industry's trending toward preventative care and wellness. As Kvedar put it, ' How can we effectively use technology to scale out people across consumers and patients, keeping them healthy and out of the high-cost part of the system?'" Click here to find out more about Virtual Healthcare Agents.

As the IVA 2014 came to a close, the Intelligent Assistants Conference (IAC) 2014 is approaching. On September 16th, 2014 in San Francisco, CA, Opus Research is holding an event involving all things Virtual Agents and self-service. "IA Conference 2014 is where executives responsible for improving customer experience and self-service efficiency will meet vendors of solutions that put Natural Language Processing, Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence and Advanced Analytic resources into practice in the real world." (Intelligent Assistants Conference 2014). The CEO of noHold, Diego Ventura, will also be attending this conference.

Have you attended any Virtual Agent conferences before? Will you be attending this years IAC?
